June was a month of honouring legacies at Toronto Foundation.  We celebrated outgoing President & CEO Rahul Bhardwaj with the launch of the Rahul K. Bhardwaj Vital Toronto Fund, a permanent endowment with annual grants being designated by the Foundation’s Board of Directors to Toronto Foundation initiatives that further our mission and vision. At the same time, we were saddened to hear of the loss of Marjorie Sharpe, Toronto Foundation’s first President & CEO.  I’ve known Marjorie for... Read More

Later this month, after nine great years, I will be leaving  Toronto Foundation. From day one I have valued   engaging in thoughtful conversations with fellow  Torontonians about the many facets, challenges,  and opportunities of city building philanthropy. I have  been pleased to share my thoughts on many of those  topics with you through this blog as well.                            A common thread that has run through many of these conversations is that strong cities are complex and... We are privileged to live in a time when most of what we need — goods, services, and information — is right at our fingertips. In just five minutes you can shop, make a grant, send a few emails, and catch up on the day’s news. Having instant access and gratification is great and very efficient but it can also make us impatient and less appreciative of the things that are truly better when they are made with a view to the long term. Good, sustainable progress takes time and is achieved by people... Read More

I am writing to share with you the news that after nine successful years, our President & CEO, Rahul K. Bhardwaj, has tendered his resignation effective June 17. He has accepted the position of President & CEO at the Institute of Corporate Directors, our country’s national association for boards and directors, beginning July 4, 2016. It is with regret and gratitude that we bid farewell to Rahul. Under his leadership the Foundation has grown immensely in scope and reputation. Most... Read More

The old adage that it takes a village to raise a child rings true in the context of building a great city. It is the coming together of time, talent, and resources from diverse groups and individuals that yields the greatest results. Leaders make this possible and in Toronto we are fortunate to have a growing list across all sectors – from not-for-profits to businesses and government too, leaders all committed to making Toronto the best it can be. Increasingly, we are seeing a new community of... Read More

The beginning of each new year welcomes new opportunities, but world events can also distract us. International unrest, market volatility, and the like take up a lot of space in the news and in our hearts and minds. We know that in this type of climate, people – strong, competent leaders - matter a great deal. Here at home, Toronto Foundation remains committed to supporting some of our city’s most important leaders, those who lead our not-for-profit organizations. Resources dedicated to... Read More

No doubt, we are living in exceptional times. Current world events remind us that being part of a global village isn’t easy. The ripples of events taking place on the other side of the world are being felt here at home. In this climate, it is easy to become anxious about the complexity of the issues and by the multitude of options for getting informed and engaged in community, wherever that might be. The power of the well-used phrase: think global, act local is particularly relevant in this... Read More

Earlier this month I gave the Kilbourn Lecture at the Heritage Toronto Awards. In my speech I introduced the idea that Toronto should turn its reputation for being nice into its defining characteristic. Toronto has a deep well of compassion but rather than it being a passive attribute, we need to make it the trait that defines us and gives us an edge on the international stage. We can’t just say it though. We have to live it. The next few weeks alone present us with some great opportunities to... Read More

With a full summer of Pan Am Games and ancillary events now behind us we are kicking into high gear for an even busier fall. All three of the Vital grant streams are in motion. Vital Ideas and Vital People are currently accepting applications. And I would like you to join me in congratulating this year’s Vital Youth recipients. The Toronto’s Vital Signs® launch date is October 6, and as the finishing touches are being applied I want to express my optimism around what the data is showing us so... Read More

Toronto’s greatest asset is its people. Like most great cities, Toronto was built by people with vision, energy, and a deep commitment to the success and vibrancy of the city. We often think of city leaders coming from the business and political sectors however leaders in the “third” sector play an important role in shaping the city we all want.  With the support of our Fundholders we are very pleased to invest in the development of future leaders in the not-for-profit sector in Toronto through...
